and 1997. He is the current U.S. Poet Laureate.

Grace talks with Billy Collins
The first program in a
six-part series features Billy Collins, newly
appointed Poet Laureate of the U.S. Collins is the
most popular poet in America, loved for his humor,
wry wit, accessible work, and poetry that combines
the comic and the profound. His conversation is as
amusing and energetic as his art. Host Grace
Cavalieri asks the poet to read from his collections;
then they enter a discussion of writers and writing.
Billy Collins offers insights into his art and
discusses his process. He talks about the new
enterprise for high school students in 2002 on the
Library
of Congress Website. Billy Collins is the author
of five books of poetry, the latest of which is
Sailing Alone
Around the Room (Random
House, 2001). The recipient of a myriad of honors and
awards, he is a Distinguished Professor of English at
Lehman College, City University of New York, where he
has taught for the past 30 years. He is also
writer-in-residence at Sarah Lawrence College. He
lives in Somers, New York.

Grace Cavalieri is the
author of eleven books of poetry, most recently Cuffed Frays (Argonne Hotel Press,
2001), and numerous
produced plays, including Pinecrest
Rest Haven (Word Works,
1998), which premiered at the Common Basis Theatre in New York, 2001. She has also
written texts and lyrics for opera, stage, and film.
Producer/host of public radio's "The Poet and the
Poem" weekly from 1977 to 1997, presenting 2000
poets to the nation, she now produces the series
annually from the Library of Congress via NPR
satellite. The recipient of awards that include the
PEN Fiction Award, The Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award,
and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Silver
Medal as well as others which honor her
"significant contribution to poetry" and
distinguish her as an exceptional woman, she is part
of the poetry faculty at St. Mary's College of
Southern Maryland and teaches workshops nationwide.
She and her husband, sculptor Kenneth Flynn, live in
West Virginia. They have four grown daughters.
