This is an older one, a little scary a little sad. Purchased it to share with my grandchildren who like a good scary movie.

1980s horror movies are just better made. This one had an emotional layer to it as well. You really feel something for all the main characters, but you know something is going to go wrong, and forever change the happy dynamic going on before Sam dies. Overall, really entertaining movie.

Unlike most people, I have always loved this movie. I really wish Warner Bros. would release a director’s cut of the film. Originally Wes Craven’s idea was to make a PG, Sci-Fi movie about teenage love that was more like Diana Henstell’s novel, Friend. The novel Deadly Friend is based on is tragic and moving, much like the film’ s screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin. I have read both Henstell’s novel and Rubin’s script, the latter I purchased through Script City. The screenplay moved me as much as the book did and is pretty much the way Wes Craven first filmed it. The studio later decided to cut out scenes that were important for character development after the original cut was filmed before a studio audience of Craven fans who, to my understanding, didn’t like it. But since I saw this movie at the age of sixteen, when it was released to theaters in October of 1986, it has always had a special place in my heart. I have owned both VHS and DVD copies of it. In fact, after the film was released to home video in 1987, I was then seventeen, I used to hurry home from school and play it on my VCR every day. I will always love this movie. I recommend it highly.

The 80s loved robots… The Terminator (1984), Short Circuit (1986), Chopping Mall (1986), *Batteries Not Included (1987), Short Circuit II (1988)… and here's another one! This playful creation-gone-wrong film by a young Wes Craven brings back a wonderful 80s nostalgia to this lifetime horror lover. Just enough zany gore, silly scenarios and a wack-tastic ending to overcome a severely limited budget.

A teenager on a university scholarship studying the human brain, young inventor Paul (Matthew Labyorteaux) creates artificial intelligence.

We meet Paul's cute neighbor Samantha (Kristy Swanson; Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Swamp Shark) and her uber-creepy sweaty abusive dad (Richard Marcus; Enemy Mine, Tremors, The Being), his creepy old neighbor Elvira (the mean old villainess from The Goonies), and some local punks who get their man-parts squeezed by a protective BB. Speaking of which, BB is super cute but he seems to take note to those who have wronged him.

Paul's robot "BB" is nothing short of absolutely adorable and he sounds like Disney's Stitch or a Star Wars Jawa. At one point when he was meeting the teenage neighbor boy I think he said "Houtini." BB is always getting upgraded and, as a result, smarter. Meanwhile Paul is making decades of scientific progress in mere weeks, already developing the circuitry to jump-start the nervous system of a cadaver.

When a prank-gone-wrong results in creepy Elvira shotgun-blasting BB to robot Heaven, Paul loses his robo-bestie. Worse yet, the very night of his first kiss with Samantha, a domestic dispute with her father sends her to the hospital with a fatal injury. So naturally Paul steals Samantha's body, surgically implants BB's "spare brain" (a motherboard, basically) into Samantha, and then Weird Science meets Re-Animator as he reanimates BB-Sam complete with remote control. Why there is no button to turn his Cyborg-girlfriend into a sex droid is beyond me. I guess as a teenage neuro-robotics prodigy he gets plenty of play already.

Let's just say that the remote control doesn't work out as effectively as Paul would like, because BB-Sam goes on a killing spree to snuff out everyone who ever wronged BB or Samantha. This in mind, maybe it's a blessing that he didn't go the sex droid route. Although it would have made for a great death scene! LOL.

Director Wes Craven (Scream 4, Deadly Blessing, Cursed) was playful with his low budget-limited few moments of gore. A violent dream sequence has Samantha killing her father and then being doused by his blood as if pouring from a spout. We also witness the exquisitely goretastic use of a basketball for a detonation-like decapitation. Not to mention the unreasonably stupid but equally super-fun gory surprise ending.

The basketball scene and the ending alone are worth owning this movie, but it offers a lot of 80s horror nostalgia and a story that works in its own zany way. I really enjoyed it.

It's been a while since I watched this movie and I enjoyed it as much now as back then. Some parts were actually very funny. Loved the scene with the girls gym teacher and the basketball.

Alright so this is a weird one, but basically this film is kind of like if you took the film "Short Circuit" and turned it into an R rated slasher film. It starts off almost like a Joe Dante film(think Gremlins) where our lead teenage character Paul moves into a new neighborhood with his cute robot that he invented(that even makes cute little noises like in gremlins). He meets some new friends, they hang out, use the robot to play harmless pranks on people, very wholesome stuff. Really makes you think that your watching some G rated family film at first; but then the movie moves into it's second act. Alright, you ready for this? Well... The new girl next door that he just met ends up getting beaten by her abusive father leaving her brain dead and Paul decides to take her corps and put the computer chip from his cute robot pale into her skull which somehow brings her back to life but in true horror fashion similar to "Pet Cemetary" she then starts to go on a uncontrollable murder spree against her father and anyone else who gets in her way. Yeah... its weird. It's one of those movies that you just kind of have to see it to get an idea of what I'm taking about. Truth be told, a lot of it feels half baked and there's a lot of unused potential. Most of the themes and characters aren't really explored that much and as strange as the story is, the filmmakers don't really do much with any of it. The movie ends in an extremely anti-climatic way and it seems like the filmmakers really didn't know what kind of film they wanted to make. It's not bad, I mean the actors do all give pretty good performances, especially the lead actress who actually does a really good job selling the idea of a creepy dead girl possessed by an robot computer chip. But ultimately it is a hard film to recommend. It's not really a slasher film as there are only really 2 kills in the entire movie. BUT, that being said, one of the kills is perhaps one of the greatest gore shots of any movie I've ever seen. I'm not going to spoil it, but it involves an elderly lady getting killed with a basketball and if you like 80s gore effects at all, then you have to check it out. It's incredible. That and there are several gory dream sequences scattered throughout that just barely keep this movie from ever being too dull. Basically, this movie isn't that good but is has just enough weird stuff in it and likable characters that I would very hesitantly recommend this, especially if your a fan of 80s horror.

This was a favourite of mine from the 80s - I just rewatched it again for the first time in years on this DVD. The picture and sound quality are first rate.

The film itself is a real mix of teen movie, horror, sci-fi, cheese, romance and tragedy. All the actors are excellent and really carry the emotion of the story. Lots of classic moments - you will either love it or hate it!
