Anniversary

Love, how this has lasted makes me ache.
Year by year my unease deepens and today
The waves are high as houses.

Our bodies won't outlast our books or the wooden
Shelves that hold them. Nothing mortal holds.
The little life we built

Around us bends in the wind, slants like a boat
Already taking water. Here we are
In the hold together.

Stay with me until the bow breaks—it will
Hold out a while longer. I'll sail its shell
To Lethe later. Love,

Pretend with me we'll meet up there.
