Of All Earthly Things

High summer dream and drowse.

Waves scrape the littoral, drain back to sea.

Heat pure as light. Pale morning hours,

trees like priests wearing the green of ordinary time.

Fruits dizzy with their juices. Leaves

at full flesh. Of all earthly things, Paradise

was most like this.
