Once the Last Child Leaves

the mind flies
off into a tree

Somewhere.

Perches

like a screech owl—
size of a pint jar—

in white dogwood
branches,
bearing

bishop purple
mettle,

mantle
of dusk—steel

twilight's

darkest stage.

Makes that

Sound: small,
yet yearning—

spooky purr,

lost trill

searching
