Warm milk
of Darvocet,
comforter

pulled up
to the headboard,
heavy strips

of linen
glued over forehead
and mouth.

In the morning
she will come to me
like Carter

to a tomb,
unwrap my mask,
empty the sand

from my lungs
what will
I say

then
to the unchanged
world?
