Catherine Stearns has had poems in several journals including Modern Poetry Studies, The Iowa Journal of Literary Studies, Poetry Southeast, New Delta Review, and Salamander. A collection of poems called The Transparency of Skin was published by New Rivers Press. She lives in South Natick, Massachusetts.

Snow In August

With a flick
of her wrists,
she broke the chicken's neck
and laid its body on her lap
where my sister's head
had been.
   Over her knees dangled
waxy yellow bird feet,
and the white feathers
she began to pick
fell around us like snow.
