A few trees
in the back yard
suffice to split the sky
into manageable portions
especially at dusk when
the limbs and twigs and frizzy
new growth of the river birch
appear inked on the sky
like a dark nervous system
linking the Four Directions:
Black Tortoise, Blue Dragon,
Red Bird, White Tiger
