Galaxy Hotel, The Old Quarter

In Vietnam, a squatting lady
dunks limes

in the sewer, sidelong
checks the street,

rubs them to a sheen
against her sleeve.

I watch behind the hotel
curtain.

Next door, on the ledge,
splayed pigeons

dry on clotheslines
like fruit bats.

Hanoi. I love its filth.
For you and me,

the denouement.
