The Life of Objects

My body
is a boat
fastened with rope
where water
trips on the skirt
of its tide.
One man built me
another man bought me
& so I wait
nailed & tied
to carry him across.

What I want
is to untether
to row myself
out to open ocean
be torn apart
and there
to float
driftwood
drunk with salt,
to wash ashore
on a nameless island
where no one
& nothing
says mine.
